Celebrating 2.0 Years in the Frick Building

On November 1st 2006 we opened up our second location in the lobby of the Frick Building, less than a year after starting our business in the Strip.  The Frick Building was an important stepping stone for our business.

First, it was at this time that we started hiring employees (for the first 8 months it was just the original three- me, Alexis, and DJ).  Finding great people (and friends) that care about what they do has been the most critical element of our success.  Secondly,  managing two stores required us to create systems so that no matter who was working the bar on what day things would flow seamlessly.  Third, and we didn’t realize it at the time, it gave us a chance to try doing things a little differently the second time around.

Since that day we’ve been on quite a journey, one that we’re still on today.  We have a pretty clear vision of where this thing is going, and realize that while many customers will come along for the ride there may be a few that do not- and that’s ok.  We’ve become what we are today by not trying to be everything to everyone.

So yeah, our business is a lot different today than what it was in early ‘06.  Without that little bar in the Frick Building… who knows what we’d be today.

Frick Coffeebar 1, Strip District Shop 0

Our Frick Building coffee bar got some media props today, putting it amongst the downtown Pittsburgh pantheon of coffee juggernauts.   The next step is to get our name right… from today’s Tribune Review:

Downtown and its fringe areas have a large selection of coffee houses, besides Crazy Mocha.

Among them are nine Starbucks locations, including one each on the South Side and at Station Square; seven Cool Beans Coffee Co. locations, including one in Allegheny Center, North Shore; six Au Bon Pain Co. Inc. shops; a 21st St. Cafe in the Frick Building; a Dunkin Donuts in Market Square; and a coffee bar opened by Nicholas Coffee, also in Market Square.

Macchiato’ing

This is long overdue but we’ve decided to free pour our macchiato’s from now on.  Previously we were dolloping a tight little cappuccino-like foam on top of the espresso.  We like this drink better- it’s cleaner, it looks better, and has a better mouthfeel.  Smell you later, dollop!
