Esmeralda Especial On Sale Thursday 10/4/07

geishatree.jpgAt our cost of $198 per pound, we have determined that a 12oz cup of Hacienda La Esmeralda’s “Esmeralda Especial” will cost $22 for a 12oz cup. We kicked around the idea of making an 8oz size, but decided in the end that the best way to represent the coffee on the Clover was at 12oz. This price allows us to cover our cost of the coffee and offer something truly special to our customers. We recommend you bring a friend to our Strip District cafe and split it.

Speaking of price, the sales tax alone is actually higher than what most cafe’s in Pittsburgh charges for a 12oz coffee.

Here’s the tale of the tape…

The World’s Most Coveted Coffee is on it’s way to Pittsburgh!

21st Street Coffee and Tea is proud to announce that we have Hacienda la Esmeralda’s Geisha coffee, the same coffee purchased at auction for $130/lb earlier this year, on order from Intelligentsia and scheduled to arrive next week. We will update our website later next week with details of when it will be available.

geishajaramillo.JPGSince we are talking about the world’s most expensive beans, our cost was $198/pound, understand that this will not be an inexpensive cup of coffee. Our margin on each cup of Esmeralda will be slim, but we didn’t purchase this coffee to make a big profit. We are as intrigued as anyone to see how Esmeralda stacks up against all the other great coffees we’ve served in our shop over the past couple of years. Many are calling it the finest coffee in the world- it is certainly the most coveted.

Having said that, we will be brewing the Esmeralda on the Clover to order and will probably offer an 8oz size- pricing is TBD as we’re figuring out the dosages and this coffee works out to around $.45/gram!

We have started putting together an email list of folks that have told us that they want to buy a cup so that they could have some before we sell out of our limited supply. The list is growing so if you are interested please email us at info@21streetcoffee.com. To my knowledge we will be the only shop in the area where you can try this unique and record-breaking coffee. We are certainly the only shop in Pennsylvania where you can have it freshly brewed on the Clover. Get in here as you may not get another chance to try it for whole year!

Some truly "excellent" coffees this week!

This week our menu will feature the coffees Intelligentsia offered at our grand reopening. We have less than a pound of each, so try them while they last!

Llano Grande, Colombia: Cup of Excellence, Fourth Place
From the Meta region in Colombia, this fourth-place winner in the Cup of Excellence Competition is nothing short of magnificent. The clarity of this coffee provides an ideal foundation for a vibrant variety of fruit notes, including green grapes, peaches, and dates. Being a balanced, medium-bodied coffee, it finishes sweet and crisp making it hard to have just one cup.

Tres Santos, Colombia - Huila Micro-Lot: El Descanso
Relaxed, just as the name suggests, this coffee finishes as elegantly as it begins. The smooth, sweet finish is preceded by gentle notes of black mission figs, dried cranberries and vanilla.

Tres Santos, Colombia - Huila Micro-Lot: El Mirador
An exceedingly elegant coffee, el Mirador presents a bouquet of jasmine and coffee blossom atop a syrupy, merlot-like body. The finish maintains its complexity with sweet licorice root and dried dates.

Tres Santos, Colombia - Huila Micro-Lot: La Piragua
Astoundingly articulate, this coffee flawlessly showcases citric lemon acidity rounded by notes of candied fruit and honey. The finish is clear and transparent and delightfully maple-like.

Notice that the “regular” Tres Santos is no longer on the menu- Intelli has sold through the Huila Lot (other than the micro lots) so we have removed it from the menu. We’ve also removed some of the blends from the brew bar menu. We’ll still have them available, just ask us.
