Very nice TV exposure today!

KDKA’s Pittsburgh Live Today visited our Strip District store this past Friday to check out our new shop, the Clover, and a now infamous $22 cup of coffee we have on our menu (and is almost sold out).

They did a really nice job with the two spots that aired this morning, but if you weren’t able to see them live we have video links below. Enjoy!

    Esmeralda almost sold out

esmeralda8oz.JPGIf you haven’t had a chance to stop in to try the world’s #1 coffee, the Esmeralda Special Auction Lot, there isn’t much left.  This is part of the actual award winning lot of coffee that garnered the record auction price this past summer.

We can probably brew another 5 or so cups on the Clover and we doubt we’ll be able to get more once we sell out- so get down to the Strip and try it before it’s gone for the year!

Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Jaramillo Especial

From Intelligenstia Coffee Roasters we’ve obtained a few pounds of the worlds most sought after coffee…

Words fail to properly capture this coffee. From the very beginning it mesmerizes your senses with its intense aromatics of jasmine and coffee blossom. The ethereal nature of this coffee will befuddle and captivate you – making each sip an urge for another. As you taste it, notes of lime, honeysuckle and tangerine undulate atop a crisp, citrus acidity. The potent sweetness transforms into a finish of white grape and jasmine flower. La Esmeralda is a truly unforgettable coffee experience.

Esmeralda (Non-Auction) Sold Out in 1.5 days

Well… for as many strange looks that I had this week when offering a very rare coffee for $8 per 12oz cup, we sure sold out fast. We purchased what we thought would last a week and put it on the brew bar menu Thursday (10/4) morning, but it was sold out by early Friday afternoon. So much for that!

It seems that we could have sold an equal amount over the weekend as people have continued to come in and ask for the Esmeralda.  I had half a cup and split the other half with our staff and must say that I was not disappointed at all- wonderful stuff with very nice citrus and floral notes. We dialed in the Clover coffee machine to the exact specs (including a special water temperature) used by Intelligentsia at their roasting works when they unveiled the coffee at their 10/1 preview party. Customers were not disappointed either- one person even bought two cups.

Having said that, we will not be able to secure any more of the $8/cup La Esmeralda until Intelli has sold through their 100lbs of the auction lot.  If any remains at that time we will get it again.

So now we can turn our attention to the Auction Lot Esmeralda Especial- yes, for real this time.  This is the same coffee judged best in the world and set the record price of $130/lb this past summer (our cost is $198 roasted).  This will not be an inexpensive cup at $22/12oz, but based on the interest so far this will not last.

The real deal goes on the menu this Thursday 10/11.

Non-Auction Lot Esmeralda Up First, Auction Lot Next Week

We found out today that we were accidentally shipped the non-auction lot “Esmeralda Especial” coffee rather than the  Hacienda La Esmeralda Auction Lot that garnered the $130/lb green price.  This is actually great news for a couple of reasons…

    • We can offer this coffee on the Clover at $8/12oz cup rather than $22 for the auction lot
    • We have read that this coffee is very close in it’s flavor profile to the auction lot (this coffee was procured by Intelligentsia outside of the auction from Hacienda La Esmeralda and was served at their preview party this past Monday night)
    • We will have the “real deal” next Thursday- so if you want to compare the two you may be able to try them both, but at any rate this means that there are more cups available so more people will have the opportunity to try this wonderful coffee

Here’s a recent interview from Chicagoist with Geoff Watts regarding La Esmeralda… also, another article asking- is it worth it?

And on another note- a new Tres Santos Micro-Lot, Melange, will also debut on the brew bar menu starting tomorrow.

    Enjoy folks!
