At 21st Street Coffee and Tea we have a few simple titles- cashier, barista, and managing barista. Essentially everyone starts as a cashier, and advancement depends on you. So what exactly does one do here?
Cashier responsibilities include:
- Take orders and ring up sales
- Greet customers and create a friendly environment
- Prepare and serve pastries as well as simple food items
- Prepare and serve drip coffee
- Wash dishes
- Restocking various items and communicating store needs to management
- Cleaning – equipment, tables, counters, floors, bathrooms, taking out trash
- Assist the barista on duty so that he/she may be more efficient
- Learn and demonstrate understanding of: the 21st Street Menu – know the drinks, how they’re made, and what they taste like
Barista responsibilities include those of the cashier, plus:
- Be able to work alongside other baristas and share the space/equipment effectively
- Recommend ways to make the business better and take ownership of changes
- Resolving customer concerns
- Learn and demonstrate understanding of:
- How to pull a proper shot of espresso, and how to identify and troubleshoot a poor one
- How to steam a proper pitcher of milk
- How to make drinks to your highest standard of quality, repeatedly
- How to move efficiently behind the bar and effectively move the line
- How to work with minimal waste of coffee, milk and other supplies
- How to brew coffee using various methods, including Clover
- Fair Trade, Direct Trade, and other coffee related marks
Managing Barista’s responsibilities include those of the Barista, plus:
- Be responsible for counting out the drawer and making bank drops
- Working unsupervised at our downtown location
- Mentoring fellow baristas/cashiers
