21st Street Coffee and Tea featured in today’s paper

From today’s Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

“Coffee is an incredibly complicated beverage. It has four times the flavor compounds of wine,” says David Latourell, who is in charge of marketing and sales for the Seattle-based The Coffee Equipment Company. “This takes a very simple brewing process, speeds it up and controls quality. Coffee is brewed individually, one cup at a time, exactly the way it should be brewed.”

Some truly "excellent" coffees this week!

This week our menu will feature the coffees Intelligentsia offered at our grand reopening. We have less than a pound of each, so try them while they last!

Llano Grande, Colombia: Cup of Excellence, Fourth Place
From the Meta region in Colombia, this fourth-place winner in the Cup of Excellence Competition is nothing short of magnificent. The clarity of this coffee provides an ideal foundation for a vibrant variety of fruit notes, including green grapes, peaches, and dates. Being a balanced, medium-bodied coffee, it finishes sweet and crisp making it hard to have just one cup.

Tres Santos, Colombia - Huila Micro-Lot: El Descanso
Relaxed, just as the name suggests, this coffee finishes as elegantly as it begins. The smooth, sweet finish is preceded by gentle notes of black mission figs, dried cranberries and vanilla.

Tres Santos, Colombia - Huila Micro-Lot: El Mirador
An exceedingly elegant coffee, el Mirador presents a bouquet of jasmine and coffee blossom atop a syrupy, merlot-like body. The finish maintains its complexity with sweet licorice root and dried dates.

Tres Santos, Colombia - Huila Micro-Lot: La Piragua
Astoundingly articulate, this coffee flawlessly showcases citric lemon acidity rounded by notes of candied fruit and honey. The finish is clear and transparent and delightfully maple-like.

Notice that the “regular” Tres Santos is no longer on the menu- Intelli has sold through the Huila Lot (other than the micro lots) so we have removed it from the menu. We’ve also removed some of the blends from the brew bar menu. We’ll still have them available, just ask us.

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who made it out to our Grand Reopening party last night- it was a huge success. We had a great turnout as the place was packed.

Anastasia from Clover was on hand to demonstrate the brewing power of our new Clover and Jay from Intelligentsia made the trip from Chicago and brought some wonderful micro-lot coffees from the Tres Santos program as well as some Llano Grande (placed 4th in the Colombia Cup of Excellence). All I can say is- delicious!

As promised, we had live music and lots of food, and all drinks were “on the house” as a thank you for supporting us during the past 18 months (thanks to everyone who tried to pay!). It’s been an amazing journey from where we started this business in our tiny little space on Smallman Street in the Strip, to now having our two fine locations downtown, our great staff of folks that work so hard every day, and the finest coffee and equipment on the planet. We look forward to what the following year will bring.

Thanks again to everyone who made it out! (more photos on our Flickr page)
