Here’s an article describing the differences between fair trade coffee and direct trade coffee, from the Chicago Tribune. Many of the coffees that we serve in our shop (including our House Blend) are products of Intelligentsia’s Direct Trade.
All’s not always ‘fair’ in coffee labeling
The direct trade criteria includes a “verifiable price to the grower or the local co-op, not simply the exporter, must be at least 25 percent above the Fair Trade price; the grower must be committed to healthy environmental practices; the grower must be committed to sustainable social practices.”

In the May issue of Esquire magazine, the following was listed as #5 on a list entitled “60 Things Worth Shortening Your Life For”:
5. Black Cat espresso from Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea.
A triple. Note the exceedingly heavy body, with chocolate, caramel, and dried-fruit notes. Also note that you’re vibrating. That means it’s working. intelligentsiacoffee.com.
While it’s true that we pull double shots downtown with triple baskets (that’s over 21g of Black Cat!), please keep in mind that coffee and especially espresso has been shown to have significant beneficial health effects when consumed in moderation.
More importantly the stuff is just plain delicious- isn’t that reason enough?

Here are a couple of shots of some lattes we’ve been pouring… “for here” and “to go”. Start with a double espresso, incorporate a little air into the milk, and the rest is practice… practice…

Caffe Intermezzo expands, adds top-shelf espresso machine, coffee
Here’s the picture (photo by Dominic Demangone) that I wanted to see but they opted for the “action” shot. From left to right you have DJ, Luke, Alexis.
The cool thing is that several new customers found us today after reading it so if you haven’t already, stop in and give us a try!
The next shot is a bird’s eye view (or a mezzanine view if you will) of our downtown shop (photo by Rob Harkey)…
